Flower City Habitat for Humanity holds building event
Rochester, New York – In honor of Women’s Equality Day, which is celebrated on August 26, Flower City Habitat for Humanity is holding a special women’s building event on Melville Street in Rochester.
The day commemorates the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote.
The team shared why it’s so beneficial to work alongside other women.
“It’s women empowering women,” said Lystra McCoy. “So often times you know we don’t have the skill sets and normally its males that are on the construction site but it’s all women and if you don’t know how to do something, it’s a woman that’s telling you what to or not telling you showing you how to do it.”
So what does a “women’s build house” mean? Organizers tell us it comes from teams of women combining their fundraising efforts and volunteer build days to make it happen. Often, the home is for a working woman who is the head of the household.
The women are scheduled to finish this house in October.
