Rochester Animal Services sees brighter future with investment in community outreach and care

Rochester, New York – Rochester Mayor Malik D. Evans has announced a major investment effort aimed at enhancing the services and facilities at Rochester Animal Services (RAS). Speaking about the initiative, Mayor Evans shared that over $2.6 million has been allocated toward upgrades that are already completed, currently underway, or planned for the near future.

Some of the completed improvements include new vehicles for community outreach and animal transport, fresh exterior lighting for better visibility around the building and parking lot, and a fully upgraded security system.

Staff members now also benefit from 15 new two-way radios, making communication smoother during daily operations. For the care of animals, RAS has added a new bathing tub, a steam sterilizer, and fresh cabinetry in the clinic area. Access to the surgery room has been improved with new doors and upgraded medical equipment.

Visitors to the facility may also notice the freshly painted lobby with new privacy shades, and new countertops are expected to arrive soon. Other completed updates include a commercial dishwasher, new laundry machines, and revamped office spaces featuring new furniture and carpeting.

Renovations are still underway. Crews are working on rehabilitating the windowsills and installing a brand-new reception desk. Efforts are also focused on improving the building’s ventilation system to ensure healthier airflow for both animals and staff. Another important project involves updating the in-floor drains in each dog kennel, replacing older trough drains with more modern solutions.

Looking ahead, Mayor Evans revealed even more exciting upgrades are planned. Future investments will focus on upgrading the dog kennels to better meet the animals’ needs and making plumbing improvements in the animal care areas. A new dog park is also in the works for the city’s west side, giving residents and their pets a fresh space to play and socialize.

For those interested in bringing home a new furry friend, Rochester Animal Services is open for adoptions daily from 12 noon to 4 p.m. at 184 Verona Street. The center encourages community members to volunteer, offering roles in animal care, fostering, community outreach, administrative support, and fundraising.

Volunteer opportunities are organized through the Verona Street Animal Society (VSAS), a nonprofit that supports RAS’s mission. Anyone 18 or older can apply to volunteer by visiting www.VSAS.org/volunteer.

Mayor Evans emphasized that these investments reflect Rochester’s commitment to animal welfare and community engagement, ensuring that Rochester Animal Services continues to offer a safe, welcoming, and modern environment for pets and people alike.
