Avenue Blackbox Theatre receives $190K for improvements and jobs
Rochester, New York – On Monday, The Avenue Blackbox Theatre, a center for theater, music, and community arts on Joseph Avenue, celebrated receiving $190,000. The facility debuted in 2018.
The theater claims that these funds came from a combination of grants and contributions and intends to use them for staff expansion and building upgrades. According to Avenue Blackbox, a $100,000 grant from State Senator Samra Brouk’s office provided the majority of the cash.
“At this point, we’re at a point where to sustain this impact we really really need to focus on creating jobs and opportunity here in this space and in this neighborhood,” said Reenah Golden, Founder and Artistic Director of the theater.
The theater’s Project Teen Fellow, Genesis Arrindell, gave a concert on Monday, and she was accompanied by a local keyboardist, Ariana Highsmith.
The Avenue Blackbox Theater intends to fill important leadership positions with new hires, including Alecia Scott, a former adolescent fellow who was employed on a full-time basis as a new receptionist.
