22 exotic animals left behind in a downtown Rochester building following the eviction of the tenant
Rochester, New York – Following the discovery of almost twenty animals in a downtown building last week, the Humane Society of Greater Rochester launched an investigation.
In one of the building’s rooms, 22 exotic pets—including geckos, a turtle, snakes, and more—were discovered in bad shape.
After the tenant was evicted from the property and left their dogs behind, the Humane Society discovered the animals.
“The investigation came to a headway when the landlord notified us that there had been an eviction and a lockout notice and that animals had been left behind,” said Ashley Zeh, director of communications for Lollypop Farm.
Together, those 22 animals were found to be in “dehydrated and emaciated” conditions. There was a dead animal among those.
Zeh claimed that the animals were not receiving regular treatment and that humane law enforcement had been looking into the room where they were discovered for some time.
“My understanding is that this location was presenting as an exotic pet rescue, so there can be this many animals,” Zeh said. “It’s really about care, and it’s also the fact that they did get evicted and left the animals behind.”
The Seneca Park Zoo is also assisting with the care of a larger tortoise. The rescued animals are currently being cared for at Lollypop Farm.
We are informed that this is a continuing investigation, but no charges or arrests have been made public as of yet.
