Low-risk fall sports resume in Monroe County high schools
HENRIETTA, N.Y. — After months of uncertainty, student-athletes taking part in low-risk fall sports are finally back on the field.
School districts in Monroe County waited an extra week for tryouts and practices.
The Rush-Henrietta boys soccer team held a workout Monday evening. Just before they took the field, the girl’s team held their first practice of the year.
For many of these student-athletes, it’s back to working on their skills and conditioning their bodies for their upcoming fall season. It’s not just boys and girls soccer on the schedule. Cross country, swimming, golf and gymnastics are getting ready as well.
COVID-19 ended last year’s spring sports season prematurely and could’ve prevented sports from starting again until next year, but now that practices have resumed, students are ready to get to work.
“I’m a little nervous, you know,” Riley Digert said. “I haven’t really done it in a while so I don’t know how it’s going to go, but I’m excited because I get to go back on the field. I get to see my friends.”
“I was counting down the days. Little excited,” Jack Connelly said. “Little nervous. Always keeping myself busy over the quarantine to keep myself in shape and ready for this upcoming season playing hopefully JV, or varsity.”
Most sports will use the next two weeks for practice before their season officially kicks off on Saturday, Oct. 10.
