Heavy rains flood much of region

Rochester, New York – Many parts of Monroe County are submerged in water as a result of heavy rainfall yesterday.
Homes, roadways, and public parks became flooded after record-breaking rain.
Area residents say the rushing waters of Irondequoit Creek could be seen throughout parts of the area, including Linear Park in Penfield. They aren’t surprised to see the creek overflowing during rainstorms.
“After it rained all day, I knew it was going to be flooded. The force is amazing,” said Joanne of Fairport.
“It’s normally a very mild stream. We’ve walked our dogs in this area for a long time. This is certainly not a day you want to walk your dog. It’s really spectacular to see,” said Bob Gabbey of Penfield.
Ellison Park in Penfield was engulfed in water, as Irondequoit Creek runs through part of it.
Myrna Torres of Rochester was scheduled to host her son’s high school graduation party at one of the park’s pavilions.
Upon arriving at the park Saturday, Torres says she needed to change plans.
“The water in the shelter is almost up to the picnic tables. I called my son and said, ‘We can’t have this at the park.’ So, we’re going to have the party in my backyard instead,” said Torres, “There’s water everywhere. We couldn’t cross to the other side because of the flooding. It’s everywhere.”
Runoff water collected from Perinton to Pittsford, with a front yard under water on Hogan Road in Perinton and crews draining water from Railroad Mills Road in Bushnell’s Basin.
As of Saturday evening, Irondequoit Creek was recorded at flood stage which is expected to last into Sunday.
