Law Enforcement Torch Run in Monroe County raises funds and awareness for Special Olympics
Spencerport, New York – On Friday, the Law Enforcement Torch Run made its way to Monroe County.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run is founded in 1981 and is hosted by law enforcement agencies. The run raises funds and awareness for Special Olympics. In New York, the event is led by “Guardians of the Flame,” a group of law enforcement personnel from agencies throughout the state.
This year, more than 100 local law enforcement members and Special Olympics athletes participated in the run in Spencerport.
“They are world-class competitors,” said Sal Gerbino, a member of the “Guardians of the Flame” group. “They’ll take down non-special Olympians all day long.”
The event is the Special Olympics’ biggest public awareness event and fundraiser.
It generates more than $2 million in contributions in New York annually.
