Following mass shooting Gov. Hochul pledges $50M to east side of Buffalo
Buffalo, New York – Governor Kathy Hochul announced a new $50 million investment for the east side of the city, in the wake of the mass shooting at a Tops supermarket in mid-May.
On Saturday, at a news conference, Governor said that in looking for ways to help the East Side she told her staff, “Let’s go big, let’s be bold” and asked them to explore “what’s happening at the human level? What are the other needs that are unmet?”
Enter the new $50 million investment, which includes $36.5 million for housing and social services that will go to homeowners who are behind on their bills or struggling to keep their homes in good shape.
$3 million will go towards an East Side Resiliency Center where community members can go for anything from housing and finding food for their families to mental health services.
According to Hochul, these steps are just the beginning of a long-term commitment to revitalizing Buffalo’s East Side.
“This is my home,” Hochul said. “This is deeply personal to me.”
