Auburn school board officially ends renaming process
New York – This week the Auburn Enlarged City School District Board of Education formally ended the high school renaming process.
Тhe process was not fully ended until this week’s official action by the Board of Education there.
Сtudents started a campaign еarlier this year seeking to rename the high school after Harriet Tubman, the abolitionist who lived in Auburn. The board accepted a resolution to start the process, which prompted a massive outcry from members of the public.
This week a resolution was introduced and approved to ‘un-table the pause’ and fully end the renaming process.
According to officials, they had hoped the divisiveness associated with renaming the high school after Tubman would subside after it was tabled. That didn’t happen. Officials said things worsened.
The hope is that the community can move forward now.
