East Rochester Street is closed due to a massive sinkhole

Rochester, New York – Madison Street in East Rochester is now completely blocked to traffic due to a big sinkhole that appeared on Friday afternoon.

Doug Corea stated that early on Friday afternoon, his wife called to let him know that their basement had flooded.

Doug yelled, “I could have had my van inside that sinkhole!” “According to my wife, our basement has flooded and is completely covered in mud. I’m thinking, “Oh man.” I sped home and passed the sinkhole with relative ease. The thing collapsed around four or five minutes after I pulled into my driveway.”

Neighbor Carly Maira voiced concern about additional harm.

It made me a little anxious. “Hopefully, there won’t be any more sinkholes the size of the one in my backyard,” Carly added. “It appears that there will be a significant amount of cleanup work, but the workers are doing an excellent job,” I hope the water doesn’t fill it up.”

Sinkholes are typical in the summertime, according to East Rochester’s Town/Village Administrator Martin D’Ambrose; this particular one was caused by a burst water main.

“There’s so much water continuing to undermine everything underground so this hole is going to get bigger before it gets smaller,” said D’Ambrose.

The town has provided bottled water to those affected, and there is a boil water advisory in effect for four households.

“It’s unfortunate but the most important thing is to keep people safe, to repair the service, and make sure that the residents that are affected get their service back as soon as possible,” stated D’Ambrose.
