Man shot and killed as task force tries to take him into custody

Rochester, New York — According to U.S. Marshal Charles Salina, the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force was searching for a man wanted for second-degree assault against a child in Wayne County.

The suspect had a gun, Salina said. When they tried to take him into custody, there was a scuffle.

A shot was fired from that gun and hit and killed the suspect.

This happened on Vinewood Place near Dr. Samuel McCree Way Wednesday morning.

“It’s very dangerous work when you’re going after somebody that’s wanted a weapon is produced,” he said. “Unfortunately, today we have somebody that’s deceased.”

During the incident, one family member was inside the residence. At this time the suspect is not being identified.

According to Salina, no shots were fired by officers.

Loved ones could be seen gathering outside the home, embracing.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, Rochester Police Department, and the United States Marshals are at the scene.

The New York State Attorney General’s Office as well as RPD’s Major Crimes Unit and NYSP Major Crimes Unit are investigating.
